I don't have that computer any more. I installed the nvidia drivers in what I believe was the standard way in Ubuntu, i.e. through some Settings panel which was called something like "Additional Drivers" I seem to remember. I can't find that any more on Ubuntu 13.04 (on my new computer)

I have two screens configured. Usually I can run "NVidia Settings" and set up screen resolutions, twin view, etc. I installed the pae kernel with "apt-get install linux-pae-generic" (or something like that), then I rebooted (with the pae kernel) and my second monitor stopped working. So I tried to run NVidia Settings but I got the message "You don't seem to be using an NVidia X Driver". I rebooted with the old normal non-pae kernen and everything works as before.
