malheum, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-ati REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is
already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one
would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.

Title:
Blank / black text consoles on DELL D600 laptop

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-ati” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: xorg

On a new install of Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid on a Dell D600 laptop the virtual
consoles which are normally accessible through CTRL-ALT-F[1-7] are blank /
black. Nothing at all is shown, they are just dead. However, Xorg works without
any problems, I can login through GDM and use a Gnome session.

I know that the blank virtual consoles are there because I can login
"blind" and then see the logged in user when I use "who" in gnome-
  terminal.

  This is my graphics card:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV250
[Mobility FireGL 9000] (rev 01)
        Subsystem: Dell Device 011d
Flags: bus master, VGA palette snoop, stepping, 66MHz, medium devsel,
latency 32, IRQ 11
        Memory at e8000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=128M]
        I/O ports at c000 [size=256]
        Memory at fcff0000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
[virtual] Expansion ROM at fc000000 [disabled] [size=128K]
        Capabilities: [58] AGP version 2.0
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2
        Kernel driver in use: radeon
        Kernel modules: radeonfb, radeon

The problem persists no matter what monitor I use, the builtin laptop
screen, an external 22" tft from Dell connected with VGA or DVI or an
Eizo tft connected by DVI cable. It also does not matter if I use my
docking station (which has the DVI connector ) or not.
