Matthias Niess, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development
release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-nouveau REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is
already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one
would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.

Title:
  nouveau/nv don't work with NVidia 9400GT

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-nouveau” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Description: Ubuntu 11.10
  Release: 11.10

  xserver-xorg: 1:7.6+7ubuntu7

  lspci -nn | grep VGA
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation G96 [GeForce
9400 GT] [10de:0641] (rev a1)

When booting Ubuntu after a fresh install for the first time, the
screen just goes to black after GRUB. According to a bugreport at
  redhat (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=480393) this is
because of x-orgs auto-detection. When nvidias vendor-code is seen,
xorg will default to nv/nouveau. Neither work on my machine.

My workaround was booting from a live-cd, chrooting into the ubuntu-
install and installing nvidia-current(-updates) from there.
