papciopoli, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-nouveau REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is
already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one
would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.

Title:
Screen switching off with GeForce 9600 GT after fresh installation

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-nouveau” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
It has been happening since the Nouveau driver had been pulled into the
Ubuntu as a default Nvidia driver.
I have Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT video card and IIyama LCD panel with the
1680-1050 resolution.
This very annoying and long-lasting bug proceedes like this:
  1. Fresh installation is made.
  2. First reboot after installation is pending - BIOS works, but when it comes
to the Ubuntu log-in screen the panel switches off.
  3. I have manually through Ubuntu LIVE to edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg file:
the line 94 should look like this "ro quiet splash nomodeset $vt_handoff"
  4. After the reboot the other files have to be edited: /etc/default/grub and
/etc/grub.d/00-headers as well as command update-grub be made...
  5. The required resolution is given only after the installation of
propertiary Nvidia driver.
  6. And a short story of mine:
  a) I installed Lucid Lynx LTS in April 2010 and the panel switched off
  b) I installed Maveric Meerkat in October 2010 and the panel switched off
  c) I installed Natty Narwhal in April 2011 and the panel switched off
  d) I installed Oneiric Ocelot in October 2011 and the panel switched off
  e) I have installed Precise (sic!) Pangolin LTS in April 2012 and the panel
switched off.
