The snapshot attached shows what happens when the Chromium browser window is shrunk by dragging the lower right corner diagonally up towards the upper left. Clicking on a point outside the browser window refreshes the desktop, i.e., it shows the browser window without the remnants of previous window margins. This started happening fairly recently, likely due to some changes in Chromium introduced in recent updates (probably in 2014). I don't see this behavior with Firefox or with any of the other GUI programs I have (e.g., gedit. meld, Ubuntu Help, Kolourpaint, ...).
