In Oneiric this seems to go in the wrong direction, i.e. it seems to be more difficult for those (most users?) who don't like the login sound to figure out how to disable it. In an attempt to prevent that, I posted a message to the ubuntu-desktop mailing list: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-desktop/2011-October/003283.html Your contributions to that thread might make a difference. ;-)

Also it would be helpful if the default volume level was not set to MAX on first boot. (my speaker system is loud) and this is disruptive in the public / classroom.
