Just installed Ubunut 14.04 on my Aspire 5100 laptop. Problem still
exists. Screen flickers beyond usability after suspend/resume. Hibernate
has no such problem. Card not recognized/resolution not settable with
nomodeset.

This bug is related to bug 318325. I did a clean install of Lucid on
this Acer Aspire 5100 (ATI Radeon Xpress 1100). On initial login the
display is fine. After resume from RAM the screen flickers to the
point the machine is unusable.
