It seems to pull the group memberships from the chat service each time empathy is opened. For example, if you have a group setup in your facebook contacts, then each time you open empathy, the members of that group will be listed in that group, even if you changed it last time you were in empathy.

It's not always the same contact, but there seems to be several contacts to whom this happens more frequently. If it matters, the only account that I use is IBM Sametime.
