Public bug reported: xchat-gnome is unmaintained.
It was removed from Debian and Ubuntu 17.04. It was reintroduced to Ubuntu but without any real commitment to maintain the package. Its last upstream release was 9 years ago https://download.gnome.org/sources/xchat-gnome/0.26/ The Ubuntu version is a bizarre mix up of a git snapshot and 37 patches. Users would be better off switching to hexchat which is actually maintained.
