I already had the same problem about 3 1/2 years ago: http://superuser.com/questions/219099/pc-hangs-and-reboots-from-time-to-time At that time I was able to isolate the problem with auditd daemon while logging all system processes and the last system process before freeze and reboot was access to Firefox (see my answer at SU). The solution was to create just a new profile and it didn't happen again. Now in 14.04 the same problems occur again but this time creating a new profile didn't help. I thought that it could have anything to do the the graphics drivers but the latest NVIDIA update from NVIDIA site didn't solve it too. Disabling hardware acceleration in Firefox doesn't help too. I cannot say how to reproduce it. The only thing I can say is that you don't have to actively use Firefox. The freeze/reboot could appear when using Facebook, watching YouTube, but it also appears while doing nothing. Once I didn't use the computer actively, it was just running and suddenly it rebootet from itself. In all cases Firefox was running. I don't have an auditd record from this 14.04 issue yet, but if it could help and you need one, let me know and I try to record the freeze again. $ lsb_release -rd Description: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Release: 14.04 # apt-cache policy firefox firefox: Installed: 30.0+build1-0ubuntu0.14.04.3 Candidate: 30.0+build1-0ubuntu0.14.04.3 Version table: *** 30.0+build1-0ubuntu0.14.04.3 0 500 http://artfiles.org/ubuntu.com/ trusty-updates/main amd64 Packages 500 http://artfiles.org/ubuntu.com/ trusty-security/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 28.0+build2-0ubuntu2 0 500 http://artfiles.org/ubuntu.com/ trusty/main amd64 Packages ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 14.04 Package: firefox 30.0+build1-0ubuntu0.14.04.3 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.13.0-24.47-generic 3.13.9 Uname: Linux 3.13.0-24-generic x86_64 NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia AddonCompatCheckDisabled: False ApportVersion: 2.14.1-0ubuntu3.2 Architecture: amd64 AudioDevicesInUse: USER PID ACCESS COMMAND /dev/snd/controlC1: markus 2011 F.... pulseaudio /dev/snd/controlC0: markus 2011 F.... pulseaudio BuildID: 20140608211622 Channel: Unavailable CurrentDesktop: Unity Date: Sat Jun 21 09:50:42 2014 Extensions: extensions.sqlite corrupt or missing ForcedLayersAccel: False IfupdownConfig: # interfaces(5) file used by ifup(8) and ifdown(8) auto lo iface lo inet loopback IncompatibleExtensions: Unavailable (corrupt or non-existant compatibility.ini or extensions.sqlite) InstallationDate: Installed on 2014-05-11 (40 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS "Trusty Tahr" - Release amd64 (20140417) IpRoute: default via 10.0.0.1 dev eth1 proto static 10.0.0.0/24 dev eth1 proto kernel scope link src 10.0.0.2 metric 1 10.8.0.1 via 10.8.0.5 dev tun0 10.8.0.5 dev tun0 proto kernel scope link src 10.8.0.6 Locales: extensions.sqlite corrupt or missing PrefSources: prefs.js Profiles: Profile0 (Default) - LastVersion=30.0/20140608211622 PulseList: Error: command ['pacmd', 'list'] failed with exit code 1: Daemon not responding.
