Thank you for submitting this bug and reporting a problem with Thunderbird.

You made this bug report in 2010 and there have been several versions of
Ubuntu and Thunderbird since then.

Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the 
ticket? 
Or, if it is still a problem, could you run the following (only once):
apport-collect 559440

and upload the updated logs and and any other logs that are relevant for
this particular issue.

  [ubuntu lucid] thunderbird does not know what to do with png image
  files

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: thunderbird

  running ubuntu lucid (>beta2) with thunderbird 3.0.4, and the
  thunderbird-gnome-support installed.

  Email attachments of type pdf, doc, jpg, tif are recognized and a
  dialog box with suitable program to open is offered. However, for a
  png image attachemnt, while recognized as png image, only saving (or
  cancel) is offered. It does not even allow to search for a program to
  open, see attached screenshot of dialog box
