> I should not have to worry if a PC has USB2 or a combination of USB2 and USB3
Yeah, well I know that you shouldn't, me neither, but it is very likely that this bug exists precisely because of that. Back in 2017 June, one guy submitted this workaround to RedHat https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1458903 If you are affected by the same issue, then at least 3 bugs in this 'sane-backends' backlog could be merged into one - less clutter, more clear reason, affects more users, more chance to get it fixed faster. > It is easier to reboot the PC to windows, do the scanning from windows and use Ext2 volume manager to send the files back to the drives used by Ubuntu. That really doesn't sound like an easy (and not frustrating) solution. I'm currently doing roughly the same but instead of booting another OS, I turn on my other PC with Debian, which seem to work (which also has a little older version of the libsane package). ** Bug watch added: Red Hat Bugzilla #1458903 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1458903 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to sane-backends in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1779185 Title: Brother MFC-9440CN will not scan with 18.04 LTS Status in sane-backends package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: Have Brother MFC-9440CN multifunctional system connected to PC running 18.04 LTS. Everything on the MFC-9440CN worked before upgrade from 16.04 LTS to 18.04 LTS. All Brother software for this device downloaded and installed after upgrade, including the UDEV package. Xsane and all other required packages loaded. Scanner will not work. If I reboot PC to run Win XP (all my PCs are dual boot), scanner works fine.
