Hello Michael,
Thank you for submitting this bug and reporting a problem with cups. You made
this bug report some time ago and Ubuntu and cups have been updated since then.
Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the
ticket?
If it is still a problem, are you still interested in finding a solution to
this bug?
If you are, could you let us know and, in the current version, could you run
the following (only once):
apport-collect 467438
and upload the updated logs and and any other logs that are relevant for this
particular issue.
Thank you again for helping make Ubuntu and cups better.

Title:
HPLIP not an option when installing new printer
Status in cups package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
Binary package hint: cups
HPLIP is not presented as an option in a fresh 9.10 install, allowing
only DNS-SD as an auto-detected configuration. This results in the
inability to setup the FAX queue that HPLIP would provide. In
addition, xsane does not find and cannot use the scanner with a DNS-SD
configured printer.
Trying to setup the FAX queue manually, running "hp-setup -i" results
in the following snippet (FAX QUEUE setup only):
-------------------
| FAX QUEUE SETUP |
-------------------
Please enter a name for this fax queue (m=use model
name:'Officejet_Pro_L7600_fax'*, q=quit) ?
Using queue name: Officejet_Pro_L7600_fax
error: Unable to find HP fax PPD file! Please check you HPLIP installation
and try again.
The above error occurs, despite the fact that the hpijs package provides both
of the following files.
/usr/share/ppd/hplip/HP/HP-Fax-hpijs.ppd.gz
/usr/share/ppd/hplip/HP/HP-Fax2-hpijs.ppd.gz
Attached is a screenshot of system-config-printer, trying to add an HP
Officejet Pro L7650 on Ubuntu 9.10, illustrating the lack of an HPIJS
option. I will also attach a similar screenshot from 9.04, showing
that HPIJS is the default option, allowing the FAX queue to be setup,
which also results in proper sane detection of the scanner function.
