I didn't focus on one option because it seems that there is a generic way that alsa drivers offer options to mixer control software. Alsamixer seems to have support for generic toggle and slider controls. None of those options are available in gnome, and they all should be really since you can't predict what new features sound card drivers will offer.

Status in “gnome-control-center” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: I did a clean install of Ubuntu 11.10. I have onboard sound (some kind of intel one). Anyway, in the sound settings, it is missing an absolute ton of options that are available via alsamixer. For example, in alsamixer I can disabled "auto-mute" (mutes the rear output when you plug headphones into the front panel), but in the sound settings GUI there is no such option. Such a shame that we are still forced to do simple things like changing the sound settings on the command line in 2011.
