Daniel, I would change the bug description but as I see someone else has
also marked this bug as affecting them I'll leave that to you. :)
I now think that the dash to dock bugs are those that have have already
been reported elsewhere and are nothing to do with the crash. I would
not have restarted gnome-shell if I had not seen issues with the dock.
My most recent tests are telling me that if I reboot and start a number
of applications, typically *four*, then gnome-shell will only crash if I
start each of them on *different* workspaces. If I start four
applications using the *same*a workspace then I can still restart gnome-
shell with 'Alt F2 > r and enter'.
I'm marking the gnome-shell element of this report as "Confirmed" as
another user has marked this bug report as affecting them. I don't think
that the dash to dock element of this report is now relevant.

Title:
Dash to Dock behaves strangely then gnome-shell crashes when forcing a
restart
Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
Confirmed
Status in gnome-shell-extension-dashtodock package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
These problems have been seen several times over the past week and are
partly covered by other bug reports so please mark as a duplicate if
appropriate but I'm creating this report as I feel that all issues are
connected.
The Dash to Dock extension at times:
is seen on the lock screen
changes size when hovering over a program launcher icon
loses it transparency
The last time I saw an issue was immediately after running an update
in a terminal window. As soon as the process finished I noticed the
Dash to Dock had changed appearance. As I couldn't remember how I
fixed it previously I attempted to restart gnome-shell by Alt F2 > r
and enter.
The transparency issue couldn't be rectified by changing the
extension's settings.
gnome-shell didn't restart gracefully as it should and gave the
appearance of a crash as only program windows were visible, the
remaining parts of the screen were black. I was eventually taken back
to the login screen so had to restart all of the previously running
programs.
This last issue of not being able to restart gnome-shell has been seen
on a number of occasions over the last few days, in fact twice today
and the last after a recent reboot with hardly any activity being
carried out on the PC except to start a few programs using the Dock
and running the update (which just found an update to Google Chrome).
