Title:
USB headphones not reacting with Kubuntu 13.10
Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:
Expired
Bug description:
When I plugin a USB headphone the output is not recognized. The mic
works, but not the headphone. In phonon I see that when i plug in the
USB headphone, the profile chages to HDMI. In 13.04 it worked
flawless. Plugging in the headphone switched the sound immediately to
the headphones in 13.04. I do not think the bugreporting went ok I did
thru 'ubuntu-bug -s audio' . Apachelogger helper me out on IRC. He
says to mention " sound works fine when bypassing pulseaudio, with
pulseaudio you get that alsa warning". So it seems a pulseaudio bug.
Sorry my reporting is a bit lame, but I am not a dev.
Just ping me on IRC benvantende if you need more info.
IRC log incuded below.

[11:28:30] <benvantende> uhhh well yes speakers is al fine. the problem seems
to be in how the usb headphone is recognized. mic works fine, but no output
thru the headset
[11:28:58] <benvantende> everytime i reconnect the usb the sound device
defaults to HDMI
[11:29:52] <apachelogger> that's not what the setting does.
[11:29:56] -*- apachelogger really needs to fix that -.-
[11:30:02] <apachelogger> alas, it's not a setting :P
[11:30:17] <apachelogger> benvantende: as sound card select your headphones,
then make another screenshot please
[11:32:24] --> Jekyll ([email protected]) has joined #kubuntu-devel
[11:35:09] <apachelogger> ah
[11:35:19] <benvantende> apachelogger: http://imgur.com/74H8iDH
[11:35:32] <apachelogger> afiestas_: now I get it ... the problem is that it
does not show up in about-user kcm thing?
[11:35:51] --> dpm (~dpm@ubuntu/member/dpm) has joined #kubuntu-devel
[11:36:13] <apachelogger> benvantende: if you click the 'front left' button
you don't get any output?
[11:36:18] <benvantende> no
[11:36:57] <apachelogger> hm
[11:37:29] <apachelogger> benvantende: on the first tab, did you try 'apply
list to..." and applied it to everything?
[11:38:16] <benvantende> apachelogger: yes let me shuffle it around and do
that again
[11:38:43] <benvantende> apachelogger: i also think the whole HDMI option was
not there before 13.10. not totally sure though
[11:39:15] <apachelogger> should have been anyway
[11:39:45] <apachelogger> in terminal run: PHONON_PULSEAUDIO_DEBUG=5
PHONON_DEBUG=5 PHONON_BACKEND_DEBUG=5 kcmshell4 phonon &> phonon.log
[11:40:10] <apachelogger> in the first tab make sure your headphones are at
the top of the list, then click test, wait for about 10 seconds
[11:40:36] <apachelogger> then on the second tab select your headphones as
sound card, and click front left
[11:41:07] <apachelogger> close the window again and in your home directory
is a file called phonon.log, please poste the content to paste.kde.org
[11:44:03] <benvantende> apachelogger: there you go sir!
http://pastebin.kde.org/pdbrocisn
[11:44:04] <apachelogger> afiestas_, Riddell, shadeslayer: so...
accountsservice uses .face, however kcm_useraccount and kdm use .face.icon
though... so the options are to patch kcm/kdm or patch kcm/kdm ... ultimately
the kcm would be ported to accoutnsservice though
[11:45:43] <apachelogger> ALSA lib pcm.c:2239:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown
PCM 11
[11:45:46] <apachelogger> that does not sound good
[11:46:14] <-- ximion ([email protected]) has quit (Quit: Konversation

[11:46:58] <benvantende> apachelogger: just to be clear. it worked flawless
on 13.04
[11:47:27] <apachelogger> PHONON_PULSEAUDIO_DISABLE=1 kcmshell4 phonon
[11:47:53] <apachelogger> first tab, find your headset in the list ... should
say (USB Audio) next to it ... select it and click test
[11:47:56] <apachelogger> do you get sound?
[11:49:18] <benvantende> i get a list with default, hw:0,0 etc, but YES SOUND
[11:49:37] <apachelogger> pulseaudio bug then it seems
[11:50:11] <benvantende> can i report that? i am afraid i cannot describe
that issue really well ;)

terminated!)
[11:51:15] <apachelogger> benvantende: just kcmshell4 phonon again ......

check if any of them produces sound using using the test buttons below
[11:52:35] <benvantende> apachelogger: NO "ALSA lib

[11:54:51] <apachelogger> then open kmix and make sure your volume is
actually >0 ^^
[11:57:59] <apachelogger> benvantende: was the volume >0?
[11:58:09] <-- santa ([email protected]) has quit
