I'm not sure we can "fix" DING because a desktop sized window is around
33MB on my 4K monitor.

Ubuntu's extensions have a sizeable impact on memory usage.
With the default Ubuntu extensions, gnome-shell's RSS is around 330MB.
With no extensions, gnome-shell's RSS is around 230MB.
Rough breakdown to within 10MB:
