After resuming from suspending my laptop, i.e., opening my laptop, the
docker is replaced with a recycling symbol. If I restart the gnome-shell
with "alt-F2 r", I get a message about something has gone wrong, all my
windows are gone, and the only option for me is to logout.

I expect that when I open my laptop's lid, that I be presented with a
login prompt, and then resume the suspended session.

Before I did the alt-F2 r command, I marked the end of /var/log/syslog. Here's
what follows after gnome-shell crashed, and I logged in again.
I have attached the relevant (I hope) part of /var/log/syslog.
