Yes, apparently there were difficulties in keeping the feature in GTK4
(or was it GTK3?) when they switched to GPU rendering and subpixel font
rendering was dropped. IIRC part of the reason was also that so many
people now have such high pixel density that they would never see it.

Title:
subpixel smoothing in wrong order after screen rotation

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

When you have subpixel smoothing enabled and rotate the screeen over
System -> Preferences -> Display, the subpixel order is in the wrong
direction and the fonts look bad. You have to change the order
manually in System -> Preferences -> Appearance. This should be done
  automatically.

I already posted this on brainstorm:
  http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/21954

I implemented this in my rotation scripts like this:

  xrandr -o inverted
gconftool-2 --type string --set /desktop/gnome/font_rendering/rgba_order "bgr"

this can be done for all the other rotations with rgb, bgr, vrgb,
  vbgr.
