As I understand at least the earliest comments, (comment 2 for example), this seems to be about which message defines the sort order of the threads among each other, as it can be customized by setting [`mailnews.sort_threads_by_root`](https://searchfox.org/comm- central/rev/6e3a1c0633d41956915db67ac46172b7f4a8c214/mailnews/mailnews.js#109-112). However, some later comments seem to bring up different issues as well.
