This looks relevant. The DisplayPort connection is failing at the kernel or hardware level:

My Dell Optiplex desktop 7010 and 7020 both have this problem. My Dell Pro PC16255 laptop does not have this problem. Curiously, the desktops are both Intel while the laptop is AMD.
