I did put "solution" in quotes, for a reason... I guess I'm being too
subtle: let's call a spade a shovel then: "gross hack".
I guess I agree with you: this is certainly the kind of thing that has
always gone into the ICCCM and successors, and an X based solution is
probably most natural.
