So did HBase used to return a null in the case I described? Are you changing
hbase-store back to returning a null?

In my experience default values are unreliable over time. Users can change
the defaults values in the shema at any time. My feeling is that if the user
sets something, then write it. If the user sets a column's value to X, then I
think it should continue to be X even if the default values in the schema
change later.
