Things that would help:
- apply each others patches and comment on the jira "this worked for me".
- vote for the issues they need
- ping the dev list when there is a group of related patches available
that someone could do in one hit, as a reminder.
I agree it's an important thing to encourage contributions - we want
more committers, but we need to know they are capable of submitting
patches that need little or no review.

For what it's worth, from my work with Harmony, I've seen that maintaining a
high patch application rate provides an enormous boost to contributions. The
more people see their patches being applied and released, the more they'll
contribute.
In any case, is there anything that contributors can do to help prioritize,
categorize or whatever to help out? That is besides trying to include tests,
etc.

Subject: applying patches
Does anyone have time to apply an occasional patch?
I keep track of them and I now count 223 outstanding. I know many are
sometimes a bit off base, but there's two problems with this:
- we have potential fixes for issues already
- we are not noticing potential committers
I've been trying to do it in limited areas like the surefire plugin, and
I've noticed some folks doing it in others, but we aren't covering them
all.
Anyone able to help?
