I'm also able to reproduce this problem. I have filed a bug here
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=803996 - please comment on
this bug if these are the same symptoms you're seeing or if you have any
more information. (I also notice you seem to indicate you're trying to run
a 64bit build on a 32bit OS, which makes me think maybe we should upload
32bit builds too).

Unfortunately Gaia's main "system" app which loads all of the other apps
(including the homescreen) hasn't worked in Firefox for many months. This
is bug https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=796768

The upshot of this is that you can use Firefox to load individual Gaia apps
(e.g. http://browser.gaiamobile.org:8080) but you won't be able to launch
icons from the homescreen. You can also test installing and using Open Web
Apps in Firefox (Aurora and Nightly I think) in general if they're hosted
on a web server by just navigating to them and clicking the app's own
install button if it has one. Firefox's Responsive Mode is useful for
viewing your app at a mobile screen resolution.

The limitations of Gaia in Firefox are documented at
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Gaia/Hacking but I've added a note to the MDN page
you referenced (
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Boot_to_Gecko/Using_Gaia_in_Firefox)
so
that others don't fall into this trap!

Yes, really sorry about this. We have a lot of work to do to make
development of web apps on Firefox & Firefox OS easier for developers
(including ourselves!), and I'm not sure why today's desktop build is
broken. Please bear with us and keep letting us know when you have problems!
