I think we choose this path because from the "new sms" view, you can add more recipients, which you can't from the "existing thread" view. But maybe we should be able to switch from the "existing thread" view to the "new sms" view to allow exactly this, and therefore show the existing thread when we come from the Contacts app like you suggest.
