That's something I noticed too and I'm not sure how we could make it
better. I've frequently used my Keon as a wifi hotspot so that both
my laptop and my wife's could get internet access via my data plan
when traveling. Under those conditions the only way to keep the
battery from drying up is to have it charging via USB at the same time.
In spite of this, under active usage the phone almost doesn't charge
so it's apparent that keeping both the 3G and WiFi antennas busy
(plus the AES encryption on the traffic) is not easy on the hardware.

I know that some home wifi hot spots do some kind of sleep polling
thing to save energy. It means to passively poll for incoming
ethernet requests after some time of inactivitiy every few hundred or
(even more) milliseconds. This could save battery potentially for at
least my case. I understand that when actively using the phone as a
hot spot the battery will go fast down, but for occasional usage it
could work.
Patrick might now more as he discovered that 'feature' of home hot
spots recently.

I'm pretty sure the energy-saving settings on your home AP only allow
your clients to sleep to save power; the AP itself still has to send
beacons regularly just to announce its presence. By default most APs do
this every 100ms. I'm not sure what beacon interval we use on b2g, but
maybe a longer period would save some power? (At the expense of taking
longer to associate, and maybe not showing up in some scans right away.)
