I'm using Arch Linux in a VirtualBox VM on Windows 7 for my Android and B2G dev work. My VM runs on 4 cores / 8 threads, 16GB RAM, and an SSD. I've found it very reliable and fast over the past year that I've been using it. I use it primarily through SSH from my MacBook.
USB ports mostly work for me (I think I had some trouble with the USB 3 ports on my machine and had to switch to the USB 2 ports). But again, I primarily connect my devices to my MacBook, and forward the ADB connection to the Linux VM.
