I started out with Ubuntu 12.04 x64 running in a VMware system hosted by
Windows 7 64-bit on a Thinkpad X220 with an SSD, and it was horribly
unstable. Lots of drive corruption, often unrecoverable--including of
the host OS.
When I finally ditched the VM and put 12.10 on the system natively, it
was Much Better; and I'm now running 13.04 and regularly building
gonk/gecko without any problems.
When I need Windows, I have Win7-x64 in a VirtualBox VM, though a lot of
the proprietary vendor-flashing tools don't seem to work in it.

I'm using Arch Linux in a VirtualBox VM on Windows 7 for my Android
and B2G dev work. My VM runs on 4 cores / 8 threads, 16GB RAM, and an
SSD. I've found it very reliable and fast over the past year that I've
been using it. I use it primarily through SSH from my MacBook.
USB ports mostly work for me (I think I had some trouble with the USB
3 ports on my machine and had to switch to the USB 2 ports). But
again, I primarily connect my devices to my MacBook, and forward the
ADB connection to the Linux VM.

I'm diving into Firefox OS as a long-time Mozillian but with very

I understand that we don't (and won't, thanks for the clarity, mwu)
support building all of Firefox OS on Windows because Gonk only builds
where Android builds which I understand to be only Mac and Linux.
So, as a Windows user, I have a choice to VM a Linux distro or move to
a Mac. I intend to explore both of those options and document the
process, starting with Linux in a VM on Windows 8.
For those of you who have been building Gonk regularly on Linux, what
is your preferred Linux distro and version and what is your view on
the stability of the build system on that OS and version. Also, if you
use Linux through a VM, which VM makes your life the easiest? Do any
of them have problems with connecting to devices over USB for example?
The MDN doc[1] says we recommend Ubuntu 12.04 but it's not clear to me
if that is really the best play for a new contributor or if that was
just the popular Ubuntu release at the time the doc was created.
