It's even worse than that; there's even "desktopb2g" which is more like
the Simulator but running stand alone and then there are even some devs
that debug Gaia apps by loading it directly in Firefox desktop.
They all have strengths and weaknesses in levels of maintenance,
relevance, speed; the only real definitive choice is the device.
I'll try and add some notes into that page this week.

One of the things that needs to be a lot clearer up front in the
documentation is what options are available when you want a Firefox OS
environment, and which to choose: the Simulator, the Emulator, or a
Device. That advice should be in page linked as the first item under
the Build & Install section on:
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Firefox_OS
in my opinion.
I've created a very incomplete first pass at such a page (but not yet
linked it) that summarizes my knowledge on this topic (not much) here:
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Firefox_OS/Simulator_vs_Emulator_vs_Device
Can those of you who know more please correct and expand this page,
and then someone can link it as appropriate.
Thanks,
Jonathan
