It is common for people to want to keep lists like this "clean". For
some it is a desire to remove clutter. For others it's used as a to-do
list. I'm sure there are plenty of other reasons too.

We noticed this in a very real way when we temporarily removed the
"clear all" button from the Firefox Desktop download manager. The
button wasn't really needed from a technical point of view since we
started backing the download history using a database which scaled
just fine to huge download lists.

However there was a ton of outrage over that there was no way to clear
the whole history and that you needed to delete items one-by-one. So
the button was put back.

I think we've improved the experience even further since then by in
most cases automatically hiding downloads more agressively (whenever
you close a window I believe). This removes the clutter automatically
in most cases. However we still making it possible to get to the full
history through an explicit UI. But this full-history-UI still has a
"clear all" button :)

But we should definitely not undervalue the desire for people to not
accumulate huge history databases for various things. A lot of people
will feel the desire to keep these databases clean and spend large
amounts of energy doing so.

In general, it's better to enable "undo" than to have "are you sure"
dialogs. Gmail is a good example of this where in a lot of its UI they
don't warn when you delete emails. However they make it very easy to
undo an accidental delete.

This is something we should try to do throughout FirefoxOS.
