Haha followed the link to Andrew Chellinsky's blog, looks like he's got
a good summery already.
Wish I would've had that link weeks ago when I was struggling with my Open.
Nothing like reinventing the wheel I guess.

i also made a backup of the stock recovery just to be safe... ;)
in case anyone wants to do that, it can be found by searching,
or just do this:
1) plug your phone and make sure adb sees it (adb devices should show a roamer2)
2) adb shell
3) su
4) busybox dd if=/dev/mtd/mtd0 of=/sdcard/stock-recovery.img bs=4k
5) exit exit (once from root shell, once from adb shell)
4) (optional) adb pull sdcard/stock-recovery (to get the image to your PC)
