I followed the information on
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Firefox_OS/Developer_phone_guide/ZTE_OPEN
and flashed the ZTE 1.2 beta which is found on their dropbox account - no
problems beyond any issues which are already known about that build. However,
that page contains an additional note about fixing the notification tray issue
by flashing the 1.2 git version afterwards - I believe I have successfully gone
through that procedure and the notification tray is not fixed by that. Checking
my Device Information in Settings shows the last commit info which matches the
latest commit in the 1.2 branch so I assume my phone is running the git build
now. Does anyone know what was changed to fix the notification tray problem so
that I can check I have the change ?

On a more general note I have to say that there is a very noticeable
improvement in the responsiveness of the phone between 1.0/1.1 and 1.2.
Previously I would find it a challenge to even be able to answer the phone at
times as it was so tricky to wrestle with the lock screen. The general speed
improvement (and lock screen change) seems a good reason to stay with 1.2 for
now despite some broken features such as GPS.

Although I see that many people have raised the issue regarding ZTE Open
updates in the past and it has fallen down a bottomless pit between Mozilla and
ZTE, but after seeing the potential improvements which could be achieved by at
least one more update (maybe to 1.3 ?) then surely existing owners deserve that
? I get a strong feeling from various discussions on the internet that the
current ZTE Open experience will ensure that they never by a ZTE device again
and possibly not even a Firefox OS device in the future which may be a great
shame for everyone.

Any info regarding the notification bar or any future official builds would be
greatly appreciated.
