By enabling full DevTools access (via this button), all private data
of any app can potentially be accessed via DevTools.

So, to protect the majority of users from an attacker going into the
settings and flipping a switch, we currently require a data wipe so
that it is clear the user chose to have this mode enabled from the
beginning.

Of course, I completely understand that this is not very convenient. I
am hoping we can find better ways in the future to make the devices
more hackable without this kind of inconvenience. This at least makes
it *possible* for many users who previously had no option at all to
reach the full / unrestricted DevTools mode before (since they all
required a hardware root before).

At the moment, there is no button. However, once you've rooted in this
way, you can access the devices prefs in WebIDE, and set the phone
back to limited mode. File a bug in Firefox OS :: Developer Tools if a
revert button seems useful.

I agree it could be confusing, as "root" has another meaning already.
For Firefox OS, this is a lot like a shell root, in that the DevTools
can do many powerful things in this mode.

If you can think of a better phrasing that also fits in the small
width available, I would be happy to change it.
