It should work. There are a few possibilities for what's happening:

1) It's not actually your real sent mail folder but a folder some IMAP
   client created in 2013. Note that gmail lets you hide folders from
   IMAP clients via its settings UI, so it's likely in this case that
   the real IMAP Sent folder is hidden via that mechanism to lead to
   this confusion.

2) It's a bug. Please file a bug and provide a more complete logcat
   excerpt as an attachment. http://mzl.la/file-gaia-email-bug is a
   short-link that knows the right bugzilla component to use. After you
   capture the logcat, you will probably want to just remove the account
   and re-add it since that guarantees that any broken database state is
   reset. I would suggest capturing a logcat of this in case the problem
   immediately recurs since the initial sync will be particularly useful
   if the state immediately corrupts itself.
