Related to this, another interesting idea is to provide a ***readermode
first** navigation experience where showing text has the highest priority.

This is definitely an interesting area.
It's actually pretty trivial to detect if a website has a mobile
version. We'll just need to look for a viewport meta-tag. What needs
more research and experimenting is what to do when we find a page
that's not mobile friendly.
The current readermode code works pretty well for pages that are
actual articles. But it doesn't work well for the "front page" of
essentially any website. Readermode is currently written to find a
single large chunk of text and remove everything else. However a front
page of a new website is usually a collection of links, sometimes
together with a short summary of the article and maybe a picture.
It would be a big help if we could create a readermode version of
these types of pages as well.

One idea:
We've been discussing how we can unlock the potential of existing Web
content to provide immediate user value (in conjunction with our longer term
initiatives to move the overall market in a certain direction).
Right now mobile users are faced with:
- non-optimized (to screen size/input method) Web content
- Web content that does not yet make use of offline capabilities
- and more
The project could be to determine whether or not it is possible to
heuristically determine when to put the user into a reader mode (or other)
type of experience and experiment with the automatic caching of content as a
way of improving the overall experience of the Web on mobile.
Yes, this could "break the Web", but the results may give us some good
insights into how we can add value to users of the mobile Web to overcome
the sometimes poor experiences they get today.
We may look at doing some of this in the next year, but an academic take on
this may uncover additional opportunities.

Personally, I would love to see a mobile version of IRCCloud. The desktop
version is bloated and doesn't run well on mobile. Also, it doesn't support
WebPush, and push notifications are what makes the Android/iOS apps really
valuable imo. I've heard that the company behind IRCCloud doesn't have the
resources right now to make a mobile optimized site, but they are open to
the idea. Perhaps we could reach out to them if we went down this path.

The Oregon State University senior capstone program is starting up
again this fall and asked if we'd like to participate again.
This is a program where three senior CS students work for nine months
on a project we define.
It's a great opportunity to knock off one of those items that we know
we need to do, but always gets pushed off because it's not highest
priority.
If you have ideas, send them to me this week!
