In a lot of testings we saw that the performance profit of RAID1 in comparison to RAID5 is not really viewable any more for databases (mySQL). RAID10 is a bit of a hustle to configure and maintain. I would go with either RAID5 or RAID1 as said. Uwe

I would prefer SAS-disks as Matthias mentioned. Performance-wise they seem to be faster. Of course you have to use a fast RAID-1 or RAID-5-Controller as well. Another idea could be to take a virtualization engine like Citrix XenServer of VM-Ware ESXi in the backend. And then put each different shop on an own guest root-system. (for security and performance reaseons). The servers I go for are able to handle multiple IP-configurations and are managed systems. I do not have the technical skills and human recources to maintain and monitor the system 24/7. I also plan to use the HTML-Caching-Module by FATCHIP for the highly visited / peak-plagued shops, wich is perfect for balancing peak-times such as commercials and stuff like that. MySQL-config and DB-table-configuration of the individual shop can be tweaked additionally - wich might also bring a certain performance-boost and stability. This is something I will take care for after moving to the managed system. How many visitors (average / peak) is your configuration able to handle? What would you expect the following machine to be able to handle? At the moment only one CPU is mounted. Intel CPU's have more performance, but as cost as more than AMD CPU's. At least use a RAID I array with SATA disks. On RAID I you have secure and a some performance(Read) features. To Improve performance you can add a SSD RAID I array, also with secure and performance features. One other option is to use SAS Hard-disks to improve performance. To split HTTP Server and MySQL Database also improve performance. Another performance boost is to store the Oxid Pictures on another HTTP Server. Modern Browsers used max 8 connections to one server to load sources, with that you can increase these connections. If you are planing several shops with sevaral IP's and SSL certificates you need a Provider that offers your IP-Address afford. Most Provider offers max 3 IP-Addresses per server. We use a Provider with a Cisco Gbit Switch to manage a lot of IP-Addresses. Remote Management is a good feature to access your server on e.g. configurations faults (Network). With these feature you have the possibility to access your server faster than the Service-Worker of your Provider and you save money. What machine would be able to handle all four shops?? Is it reasonable to let all four shops run on one machine, or would it be better to put each shop onto a single machine? I am thankfull for all information / own experiences / known configurations and so on.
