Its a bit redundant, thats true, I think of it like an index for fast access. You have all the information in id/parentid/oxsort, so this can be seen as master, and from there, nested sets structure is built. Oxid itself uses nested sets so rarely that it might look like the overhead in maintaining nested sets is not justified. But if you write a module and need something like get all childs and subchilds it is nice to have nested sets available. Maybe nested sets could be dropped, I dont know how much the performance impact would really be if recursion was used in such cases, probably not really notable. Talking about things that could be dropped, first two things I would mention are Content Cats and Price Cats, which both seem close to useless to me, and equally unnecessarily complicate the template and core code in lots of places.
