i think its more like the other way around, id/parent is used for building tree etc. and nested sets only in some special cases. However it could be used for more simple data import. It is easier to define child-parent relation over parent id field in 3rd party system and then import it to eShop. Parent id is also useful in cases when nested set values are screwed for some reason and you need to rebuild the tree completely.
