To me the matter looks a bit more complicated, and I'm somewhat in
disagreement with JM here:
- You might remember our huge resource file and OLH update to v3.20 we
made years ago. One example I recall is that you renamed "Lister" to
"Message Reader" because you said "Lister" would not tell anything to
an English user. I also corrected a lot of false "item numbers" in
both the resource file and the OLH (help items pointed to the wrong
dialogue or vice versa) and applied changes to the text of some OLH
items itself.
- These changes still need to be (probably just partially) applied to
v3.40. This is independent of the Freeware changes JM made to v3.2x
(AFAICS). We would need to plow through the diff file of the huge
update and all later changes that have been applied to v3.2x in order
to see *which* changes we need to apply to v3.40.
This also applies to the German resources and OLH.
- The Freeware changes to v3.2x unfortunately a) reverse some of the
changes of the huge update mentioned above, and b) have invented new
changes which need to be reversed (e.g. the "kb" vs. "Kb" vs. "KB"
issue, where only "KB" is correct).
- OTOH in the meantime changes have been made to v3.40 which might be
more current than the stage we see in v3.2x (even at places which have
been changed in the huge update). In these cases we need to check
which is the more current version (or which version we prefer). It is
a question if we want to backport these changes to v3.2x where
applicable.
- At some places, differences between v3.2x and v3.40 in the resource
file and the OLH are natural because the versions behave different.
We have to make sure that we do not apply changes from 3.2x to v3.40
or vice versa (whichever is the more current stage) which simply would
lead to a wrong OLH text for instance.
This all has to be sorted out in some way. To me it looks everything
else than simple and you can get easily confused when dealing with
several diffs and file versions of several XP versions. You need to
have the time to concentrate on this matter, and currently time is
something that I'm lacking of dramatically (even more then usual).
Nonetheless it has to be done and we shouldn't wait too long, but we
need to do it with extreme caution and care rather than in hectic.
I'm abroad from Sunday until Thursday night next week, BTW. I suggest
that we wait until Friday next week, probably you will have a proposal
in the meantime how we should proceed in detail. I would like to
coordinate this with you.
Michael
