would it be correct to assume that magnolia doesn't accept jsp % tags?

Hi. I'm very new to magnolia. I tried creating a new template following the
tutorial on the site and succeded in creating a page using it. It works fine,
but when I tried inserting java code using the <% whatever %> tag it doesn't
work. It just shows the tags as if it was normal text.

The $ tags in the tutorial example works, of course, so I was wandering: am I
correct in assuming that magnolia disables the direct insertion of java in the
jsp pages and I have to learn the alternative or am I missing something? I'm
not familiar with the other way to write a jsp (nor am I really an expert in
jsp at all), but that's not a real problem, I can even enjoy learning. I am
however a bit perplexed.
