It might be worth being more explicit about what pieces "WebRTC"
contains (perhaps call it "PeerConnection"?), it looks getUserMedia
isn't part of this goal since it is listed separately later on.
We could explicitly call out PeerConnection/DataChannels/Transport
Service (or just say "the rest of WebRTC") if we keep the getUserMedia goal.
It may just make sense to combine the "full getUserMedia backend on
desktop" goal with WebRTC since WebRTC needs getUserMedia -- and both
WebRTC & getUserMedia will be hidden behind a config option (or options)
until the Firefox UI/frontend is landed.
* Support getting full getUserMedia working on B2G, as needed (this
remaining work will be done by the B2G team itself, so that is why this
goal says "support")
Is getting PeerConnection working not a priority for B2G?
My understanding is that PeerConnection is not a priority for B2G for
Q3. I haven't seen B2G Q3 goals, but I've looked at their roadmap, and
I'm pretty confident it won't be on their Q3 goals list. I'll confirm
this with them over the next week.
As far as WebRTC/PeerConnection is concerned: after we get
PeerConnection (and all of WebRTC) working on desktop, we'll likely
focus on Android. I believe B2G will come third -- assuming priorities
don't change.
* Get the full getUserMedia backend working on desktop
We need someone from the Firefox team to work with us on this, but I
think we already do (dolkse/dao?). Either way, we should try and
ensure that this is one of the goals for the Firefox front-end team as
well.
Yes, I totally agree. I've been chatting with Asa to coordinate this
work, and he's planning to talk to the Firefox team about what's
possible. Asa reminded me again that we only have 8 developers for all
of Firefox development. :-(
I just noticed you already mentioned this later in your email.
However, you didn't mention anything about dropping this goal if it
doesn't align with the Firefox team goals, or are we fairly sure that
it does?
I know Asa and others want to do the work this quarter. We just have to
see how this work aligns with other commitments they've already made
(i.e. is there something they can drop to do the WebRTC work without
major problems?).
Regardless of whether the Firefox team can support doing the
UI/front-end work in Q3 or not, it may make sense to just combine this
goal (full getUserMedia on desktop) with the WebRTC goal at the top (so
it includes the backend for getUserMedia on desktop as well as
PeerConnection) since WebRTC requires getUserMedia to be functional and
getUserMedia for desktop (without UI) should be landing very early in
the quarter.
Cheers,
