WebP images can be opened and saved in GIMP (using the WebP plugin
http://registry.gimp.org/node/25874).
Same goes for Photoshop (also thanks to a plugin
http://telegraphics.com.au/sw/product/WebPFormat).
And we know that Facebook would really like Mozilla to push WebP in Firefox
(http://www.cnet.com/news/facebook-to-firefox-please-add-webp-image-support/).
Also, seeing from the number of posts for WebP here, I can safely say that most
of web devs want it too.

One thing for sure, if Firefox were to integrate this image format, it would be
a lot more used! I think we can agree that it's kind of easy to say that no
websites are using it right now; of course they don't use it, they're waiting
for Firefox to integrate it! Mozilla is the gatekeeper here, and this
gatekeeper is really stubborn.

I'm very interested in what Mozilla can do with the JPEG format, but IMO it's a
completely different topic. Try improving JPEG as you want, I'm sure it will
benefit everyone in the end, but it won't bring the one feature that everyone
is asking: compression + alpha channel.

Instead of fighting against WebP, I think Mozilla should back it instead.
Improving what they don't like in it. Mozilla keeps saying that they don't have
enough resources to maintain WebP integration. First, wait a minute...
resources to maintain a lib that is officially maintained by Google? Seriously?
Second, what the hell is Mozilla doing with mozJpeg then? If you don't have
enough resources, don't do something that no one asks you to!

I'm pretty sure we all love Firefox and Mozilla here, but this topic is really
getting old. Please Mozilla, admit that you were wrong, that you didn't
believe, back in the days, that WebP will be stable one day, or that it will
still be demanded by every web developers 10 years later.

Or, at least, give us one good technical reason that also considers the alpha
compression feature.
