If I understand correctly, we are doubling both network and disk activity (possibly CPU activity, too) for this purpose. Performance- and battery-wise, that's not a very good idea.
We have been discussing with Nicolas Silva of alternative strategies for capturing thumbnails without blocking the main thread. It seems possible, but this requires synchronization with the Gfx team.
