    Thanks for the background.   I'll take a look at the history of 
`RangeInputSplit` and see if I can gain any understanding.
    
    The reason I started wondering about this was the following code from your 
suggestion.  I was trying to understand the case when  `null == iterators` is 
true.
    
    ```java
          iterators = split.getIterators();
          if (null == iterators) {
            iterators = contextIterators(context, tableName);
          }
    ```
