Hello Airflow community,

The PMC just received information that "Airflow" has been registered as a
trademark in the US for the Apache Software Foundation. I ignited the
registration process on June 17th, 2023 so just 1 year and 1 month later,
ASF got the trademark.

*TL;DR; I have a kind request that if any of you sees any important and
prominent mention of Airflow as a product - without "Apache Airflow®" at
first and prominent place it is mentioned and not linked to
https://airflow.apache.org <https://airflow.apache.org> - please let
priv...@airflow.apache.org <priv...@airflow.apache.org> know, so that we
can follow it up.*

Having a trademark means that everywhere where Airflow is mentioned as a
product by anyone (especially in commercial context) it should be referred
to as "Apache Airflow®" (and it should be linked to
https://airflow.apache.org).

The PR to update our website according to the new situation is here:
https://github.com/apache/airflow-site/pull/1037 (before registration we
could only use ™ - now we should switch to ®).

It might seem it's not much of a change. But I spoke about what it means to
Mark Thomas (VP Branding in the ASF) - with whom I spent a day with at the
"Tomcat Security day" in Bratislava after the "Community Over Code EU".
Basically - having the trademark registered, makes it a LOOOT easier for
the ASF to enforce the branding rules (
https://www.apache.org/foundation/marks/guide#naming)

For example, when the ASF notifies Facebook or Youtube or any other "media"
company about trademark misuse, it takes literally minutes to take down a
site/post/video etc. when the request is accompanied with a link to a
registered trademark. Similarly when a "cease or desist" letter gets in the
hands of lawyers and there is a registered trademark linked, usually the
action is non-disputed and followed pretty much immediately.

One of the important PMC (Project Management Committee) obligations is to
take care about the branding - and now it is going to be way easier. We
reached out to those that we know should be made aware of it.

And - of course - it will take a bit of time to adjust - but if you happen
to see Airflow referred to without it, please send a message to
priv...@airflow.apache.org.

J.
