I'm not sure what you're meaning with "lack of commitment to compatibility", but this cannot refer to OOo API incompatible changes: OOo's API is so mummyfied, that I find it a very unique case compared to other FOSS project's API. (may be "lack of commitment to compatibility" means that changes in the implementation break exisitn API?)
