This is different from the way every other mouse driven system that I've seen works. The universal convention is mouse down = arm (eg repaint button in the depressed state), mouse up = act. Try clicking on a button on your screen (any app, any o/s) and moving the mouse off of it before releasing. I think ArgoUML should do the same.
