Hi All,

About GPL:

I do understand the statements of Roy Feldman on this subject, i.e. a GPL license would force his competition to be as good as he is in donating.

So, there are some benefits for GPL. However, the following has not been discussed:

The GPL may cause (small?) compagnies to give back some code to the project, but I guess it will simply prevent bigger compagnies to take over any ArgoUML code. It will definitively stop the Poseidon scenario from happening again - do we want that? We still advertise for Poseidon on our main web-page, or is that an expression of proudness that a big company like Gentleware used ArgoUML as its code base? Was there any negative influence from the forking of Poseidon on ArgoUML? There was (AFAIK) never any code flowing back to ArgoUML, exactly like if we would have prevented the fork.

PS: Above, I use Poseidon as an example, there are others... I have no negative feelings at all against Gentleware. For Gentleware, it must be great when ArgoUML goes GPL - it prevents a competitor to do what they did...

Hence, I am undecided about the GPL...not in favour - nor against - yet.

Regards,
Michiel

And with this discussion, a question comes to my mind. If we reach no
consensus, has ArgoUML stablished a way for voting?

We don't currently have any voting rules.

Of the currently active committers are there people who haven't yet
expressed an opinion? I think Michiel said last time that he
preferred to stick with the current license. Is that still true? My
understanding from our discussions at Google is that Bob supports EPL
and Linus is no longer opposed to it (not sure he went as far as to
say he supports it).

Who else hasn't weighed in yet? Have I inaccurately represented
anyone's current opinion?

Tom
