Christian has been more lenient, and he's the release manager, so you could try making your case to him if you think the problem is critical enough. (It's been there for years, so I don't see how it became critical all of sudden, but that's just my opinion). If I were the release manager, I'd want to see a clean patch that I could review, a description of the extra testing that had been done, a statement about why it's important enough to include and a statement about why it's safe enough to include. Lacking any of this, I'd probably automatically say no, but I still might say no after reviewing the complete package if I didn't think the risk/benefit ratio was satisfactory.
